Obtaining a scholarship

Scholarships are usually merit based. So, the first criterion is academic marks. You must have an offer from the university which you need to accept. Most scholarships require you to write an essay on a given topic, and some may have an interview as well. Your CV should stand out as scholarships are very competitive.

Here are some scholarship opportunities.

There are many classifications of Scholarships, here are some examples
Prestigious Scholarships – Commonwealth Scholarship – Chevening Scholarships – targeting high flyers in academic and job performance.

University partial Scholarships – these are offered by a university – it is not too difficult to be awarded a £1,000 to £2,000 scholarship. This helps but you still require a lot of money for the balance of the tuition fees and living expenses.

University full Scholarships – most Universities offer a small number of full scholarships. You must look at their website and see if you meet the criteria for the award.

Gender specific Scholarships – Women in Engineering Scholarships

You must have an offer from the university which you need to accept to start the scholarship process.

World Student Advisors will help you process your UK university application.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Partial scholarships

Partial scholarships normally range between £1,000 and £3,500 reduction in tuition fees. Most universities offer these, the criteria for award will vary, its best to check the university you are apply to website.

Some universities offer partial scholarships based on Nationality; others on academic merits such as three A’s at A level or equivalent or for postgraduate studies a first class or upper second pass from a recognised university.

If the average tuition fees are £14,000 per year and the average partial scholarship is say £2,000 this equates to a 14% reduction in tuition fees. It’s obviously worth having, please bear in mind that you still require a substantial amount of money for tuition fees and living expenses.

UK Higher Education loves acronyms and assumes everyone knows what they mean. For example, SELT, what does this mean?

SELT is a Secure English Language Test. It's a term used by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to describe the English language tests they'll accept as evidence of English Language proficiency for your visa application.

UK Visa Immigration (UKVI) set the Tier 4 visa entry requirements, which is IELTS and the universities must adopt this standard to issue a CAS letter which is the key document to enable your visa application. Many universities will waiver the IELTS and accept GCSE taught locally at level C or higher. For Masters students, if you studied undergraduate level in the UK this is an acceptable to meet English level entry requirements.

TOEFL is not accepted by UKVI and other English tests. There was some scandal a few years ago were certain organisations were cheating and handing out sub-standard English qualifications. IELTS is the gold standard.

If you want to study in the UK it has high standards and UK degrees are highly valued worldwide. There are no short cuts. If you have an IELTS score, then you have a gold standard qualification before you start. UKVI will not accept an IELTS test older than two years for a visa application.

To apply for an IELTS, you must do this online through The British Council recognised centres. A word of warning. There are two IELTS test one is for academic the other is for non-academic immigration. Please make sure you sit the Academic IELTS test.

You have to book your IELTS test through the British Council, here is the Link.

Visa applicants can apply up to three months in advance of their travel date. UK Visas and Immigration aim to provide an appointment at your local visa application centre within five working days.

The main stumbling block for visa applicants is having the required funds in an appropriate bank account for the required 28 days. Please make sure you are fully aware of these requirements.

International students will be allowed to stay I the UK for two years after graduation to find a job, under new proposals announced by the Home Office. The move reverses a decision made in 2012 by then-Home Secretary Theresa May that forced overseas students to leave four months after finishing a degree.
