During the many years that I worked in International Higher Education, I have read several Curriculum Vitae's (CV's) as part of a UK university application. The majority has been unsuitable for its intended purpose.
Why are most CVs unsuitable for university application?
The main reason a CV is unsuitable is that it has not been created to support a university application. The student has not thought about what the university is looking for in a CV, the role of the CV in the application process, and the importance of its contents matching all of the other documents included in the application. Students tend to make one version of their CV and use it for job applications, university applications, club and association membership, finance loans, character references etc.
What is the university looking for in a CV?
They are looking for a summary of what you have achieved so far in a concise format. A high-quality CV should match claims made in your Personal Statement, list of high school and academic qualifications, stating where you studied, the institution's name, and the date of the award. To close the circle, make sure the referees on your CV match the references submitted. There should no be
year gaps and every year in the CV should be accounted for.
Your CV is an important part of you university application
Everything has to match, for example, if you claim in your Personal Statement that you carried out fours weeks of voluntary work in an orphanage, make sure this is included in your CV and the dates match. Make sure there are no date gaps, accounting for every year in the CV.
Tip one - Design and adapt your CV for its intended purpose. In this case, you are designing your CV for a university application.
Tip two
-
Visualize your university application as a five-piece jigsaw with your CV at the center. Make everything you claim in your Personal Statement, and your high school and academic qualifications be included in your CV. If you have submitted academic and personal references, make sure the authors are on your CV as referees.

If you Google how to write a CV, numerous styles, formats, and templates are available. The key points often omitted are what the university is looking for in a CV to complement its application and how the CV complements the application process. Hopefully, it's now well explained and made clear.
